Blown Film Extrusion Process

Blown film extrusion is one of the primary methods for producing plastic films, widely used in the packaging industry. In this method, plastic polymers in granular form are fed into an extruder, where they are melted under heat and pressure. After melting, the material is directed toward a circular die to form a thin tube.

Plastic film refers to any sheet with a thickness of less than or equal to 250 microns.


Production Steps:

  1. Melting the Material: Plastic materials (such as polyethylene or polypropylene) are melted in the extruder.
  2. Exit from the Die: The molten material is extruded through a circular die to form a thin tube.
  3. Air Blowing: Air is blown into the polymer tube to inflate it into a large balloon. This step thins and expands the film.
  4. Cooling: The plastic balloon is cooled by air flow to achieve the final film structure.
  5. Winding: The cooled film is collected via a roller and transformed into the final product.

Advantages:

  • Low Production Cost: This method has lower production costs compared to other methods.
  • Ability to Produce Thin Films: Blown film extrusion can produce very thin films, which are widely used in the packaging industry.
  • Diversity in Raw Materials: This process works with various polymers, allowing the production of films with different properties.
  • High Strength: Films produced by this method have good strength and are tear-resistant.
